Left-right asymmetries for pion elastic scattering and charge exchange
from polarized C-13 and N-15 are calculated and compared with the ava
ilable data. It is shown for elastic scattering that the quadrupole sp
in-flip contribution is dominant in the determination of the asymmetry
at forward angles. The distorted wave impulse approximation and optic
al model treatments are compared and a qualitative discussion of the u
nderlying physics of the sign of the asymmetry in the first diffractio
n minimum is presented.
