Abstract
A start detector system (MARS) was developed far the time-of-flight sp ectrometer TOF at the external beam of the cooler synchrotron COSY. Th e start detector system is specially tailored to the measurement of th e proton-proton bremsstrahlung, but it can also be used for the invest igation of other reactions. The MARS detector system consists of two 1 6-fold segmented rings of plastic scintillators with 500 mu m thicknes s embedded in specially formed hollow light guides. According to simul ation calculations and test measurements the light transmission of the se light guides amounts to about 40%. The time resolution for minimum ionizing particles was determined to be 0.5 ns (FWHM). (C) 1998 Elsevi er Science B.V. All rights reserved.
