Abstract
Simulation-based training supports active learning, enabling students to acquire complex knowledge and skills. Such training is inevitable w henever knowledge of and experience with professional simulation tools is essential for job fulfilment. Telematics within the training domai n enables more openness and flexibility for courses and it offers sync hronous and asynchronous training solutions at a distance. MODEM-Multi media Optimisation and Demonstration in Microelectronics-exploits both technologies to establish a European-wide training service for indust ry acid higher education. MODEM uses a virtual campus to simplify acce ss to its services. MODEM's educational settings differ in degrees of time- and location-independence and provided support. (C) 1998 Elsevie r Science B.V.
