A high-resolution transmission-electron-microscopy study of the relaxa
tion and crystallization of a Ni80B20 amorphous alloy has been perform
ed. An intermediate state, corresponding to the crystallization of Ni3
B and to the formation of amorphous nickel, is discussed. This noncrys
talline nickel is shown to consist of regions with only short-range or
der, together with regions of nascent crystallinity with a high densit
y of defects, which resemble grain-boundary structures. [S0163-1829(98
