The paper reviews recent studies concerning pectic acids or polygalact
uronic acids in suspensions of mechanical pulps produced from Norway s
pruce. Pectic acids dissolve from fibers to an aqueous phase in alkali
ne conditions such as alkaline peroxide bleaching. They have a low mol
ar mass and a high negative charge density. Pectic acids can have mani
fold effects on papermaking including reacting with cationic polyelect
rolytes and Ca2+ ions.
