Abstract
The radiation-induced chain bisulfite oxidation is of short chain leng th and is independent of the dose rate (10(20)-5 x 10(21) eV L-1 s-1) and the initial concentration (5 x 10(-2) x 10(-3) M) of bisulfite. Th e mechanism of oxidation, including the propagation reaction SO5- + SO 5- --> SO4- + SO4- + O2 (k1a) and the termination reaction SO5- + SO5- --> S2O82- + O2 (k1b), has been proposed. The branching ratio k1a/k1b = 7 +/- 1 has been derived at room temperature.
