The kinetic precesses taking place during the adsorption of propyltrim
ethoxysilane (PTMS) onto polycrystalline iron and aluminium oxide surf
aces have been investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Al
though the adsorption of PTMS on iron reaches equilibrium within a few
seconds, the adsorption of PTMS on aluminium exhibits a dramatic time
dependence. The presence of a single oscillation in the adsorbate cov
erage as a function of time indicates the existence of two distinct su
rface species, each of whose coverage varies dynamically, confirming t
he predictions of an earlier model. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All
