A novel effect of magneto-optical Kerr rotation from a surface in the
transversal geometry is predicted that is linear in the magnetization
M and is forbidden in the bulk of most magnetic media. This Surface-In
duced Transversal Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect (SITMOKE) is found to va
nish at most bulk-terminated low-index faces of cubic media but is all
owed at lower-symmetry planes so that SITMOKE is suitable for studying
the magnetism of vicinal and reconstructed surfaces. (C) 1998 Elsevie
