Fibres of a-axis lithium niobate, grown by the laser heated miniature
pedestal growth method, were heat treated to produce radial extraordin
ary refractive index gradients by out-diffusion of lithium oxide. Info
rmation on the resulting refractive index profiles was obtained by bot
h longitudinal refraction and Fresnel reflection from an end face. Pot
ential applications of GRIN crystal fibres are discussed. (C) 1998 Els
