Abstract
Inhibition of 11 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11 beta-OHSD) can cause a mineralocorticoid effect, This enzyme, in guinea pig renal cor tex microsomes in vitro, is inhibited by quercetin, tea polyphenols, f urosemide, and gossypol, The dietary polyphenols, quercetin and tea po lyphenols, interact with furosemide to enhance its 11 beta-OHSD inhibi tory effect. Tea polyphenols added to the effect of gossypol, We concl ude that the diet contains inhibitors of 11 beta-OHSD that can alter t he activity of this enzyme and may modify the degree of endogenous min eralocorticoid activity.
