Experiments with the aim to sythesize Na2Zn(NH2)(4) from the correspon
ding metals in liquid ammonia at room temperature always resulted in a
n ammoniate of the composition Na2Zn(NH2)(4) . 0.5 NH3. Its X-ray sing
le crystal structure determination was carried out: C2/c, Z = 24, a =
31.132(7), b = 6.114(3), c = 21.456(3), beta = 111.36(2)degrees, N(F-o
) with (F-o)(2) greater than or equal to 3 sigma(F-o)(2) = 2740, N(par
ameters) = 279, R/R-w = 0.045/0.050. The description of the structure
of Na2Zn(NH2)(4) . 0.5 NH3 can be derived from that of K2Zn(NH2)(4) [1
]. Na2Zn(NH2)(4) . 0.5 NH3 contains isolated molecular ions [Zn(NH2)(4
)](2-) connected by Na+ ions. Nitrogen atoms are distorted hexagonally
close packed with Zn in tetrahedral and Na+ in octahedral interstices
.
