A quantitative comparison is made between the dHvA effect in the mixed
state of a superconductor and several theories which have been advanc
ed to explain the nature and origin of the effect. The experiments wer
e performed in NbSe2, V3Si and Nb3Sn over a wide range of field and te
mperature in both normal and superconducting states. A critical compar
ison is made with various microscopic theoretical models which have be
en advanced to explain this phenomenon. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
