The 60 kV 225 kJ single-turn coil equipment, which recently went into
full operation in Berlin, was succesfully applied to spectroscopical i
nvestigations in the visible and infrared wavelength range, respective
ly. For the first time fields above 200 T are routinely available for
reproducible series of experiments in a useful volume of about 1 cm(3)
, without sample destruction. Faraday rotation as well as cyclotron re
sonance experiments in multi-megagauss fields on different semiconduct
ors are presented as examples of the efficiency of the field generator
as a scientific instrument. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights
