We review the work at the Clarendon Laboratory, Oxford, directed at th
e generation of very high pulsed magnetic fields. This includes the in
-house manufacture of a high-strength copper-stainless steel macro-com
posite wire. A description of the process is given with typical proper
ties presented. New types of coil construction, such as two- and three
-section solenoids, are discussed and their relative performances are
quantified. Fields up to 63 T have been achieved. (C) 1998 Elsevier Sc
