The major philosophies of pulse magnet design are discussed. Two of th
ese are compared in terms of the von Mises stress generated within the
winding at equal fields. The shortcomings of the use of fiber reinfor
cement in magnets is described and a method for utilizing it more effe
ctively by the fabrication of multiple layers of composite of differen
t moduli is suggested. A number of examples are given of the stress re
duction effects on particular magnet designs that can be obtained by u
sing this method. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
