A 1.6 m long x 0.1 m diameter coil has just been constructed by the NH
MFL for the University of Wisconsin Pegasus Tokamak. It will form the
central solenoid for the high plasma energy density fusion machine. Th
e magnet consists of two layers of Glidcop conductor, reinforced with
S2 glass, carbon fiber and steel. Normal operating parameters will be
14 T in a 58 mm bore with a number of pulses to 20 T+. Current densiti
es will approach 1 kA/mm(2) and the stored energy will be > 2 MJ. The
philosophy behind the design will be presented and details of the cons
truction and testing will be shown. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All
