1,2-BIS[TRIFLUOROSULFUR(IV)]TETRAFLUOROETHANE F3S-CF2-CF2-SF3 - A BIFUNCTIONAL MOLECULE WITH 2 FLUOROAMPHOTERIC SULFUR CENTERS

The title compound (-CF2-SF3)(2) (2) is prepared from (-CF2-SC1)(2) (1 ) and F-2 at -90 degrees C in 83 % yield. Reaction of 2 with CsF and T ASF yields Cs[(-CF2-SF3)(2)F] (8), TAS [(-CF2SF3)(2)F] (9) and (TAS)(2 )[(-CF2-SF4)(2)] (10). Fluoride-ion abstraction yields [(-CF2SF2)(2)F] [AsF6] (6), BF3-catalysed solvolysis in SO2 gives [-CF2-S(O)F](2) (4) , and CsF-catalysed oxidation with Fa leads to the previously reported (-CF2-SF5)(2) (11), Ab initio calculations of the molecular structure s of 2 and the related methane derivative F2C(SF3)(2) are reported.
