Cenozoic basins developed in the inner part of Albania are formed in a
n extensional tectonic regime. They are equally affected by short-live
d compressional events. The N-S Tortonian to Plio-Quaternary basins ar
e superimposed obliquely on the NW-SE Albano-Thessalian trough (Oligoc
ene to early Miocene age). Our microtectonic measurements are compatib
le with a five main tectonic steps occurring in this region from Torto
nian up to present. These steps correspond to five tectonic regional e
vents : - the first event (Tortonian) corresponds to the NW-SE extensi
on and to the formation of the Librazdhi molassic basin; - during the
second event (between Tortonian and Pliocene) the afore mentioned basi
n was deformed in compression in the NE-SW direction; - the third even
t (Pliocene) related to E-W extension, formed horst and graben systems
oblique to the previous basin; - a N-S extension (early Quaternary) i
nduced strike-slip movements on the main meridian faults; - finally (l
ate Quaternary) a NW-SE extension reactived the western faults boundin
g the Plio-Quaternary inner basins.
