To enhance power systems stability, extensive research has been conduc
ted in the area of synchronous machines control, and several technique
s and algorithms have been developed and implemented in real applicati
ons. One of the latest and most sophisticated techniques is the Artifi
cial Intelligence (AI) based control. Increased interest has been focu
sed in the use of these algorithms in control systems; different appro
aches have been proposed for their application. The results presented
on several research papers show the advantages of such algorithms over
the conventional control algorithms. In this paper, the problem of sy
nchronous machines control is considered, and an overview of several a
rtificial intelligence approaches as applied to the control of synchro
nous generators is presented. A critical and evaluating discussion on
each AI approach is also included.
