Abstract
The extent of proton transfer in amine-hydrogen halide complexes is es timated in the gas phase from quadrupole coupling constants and interm olecular stretching force constants derived from rotational spectrosco py and in low temperature matrices from infrared spectroscopic data. T he extent of proton transfer for trimethylamine-hydrogen halide comple xes is similar in low temperatures matrices to that in the gas phase, whereas thar for ammonia-hydrogen halide complexes is significantly gr eater in an argon matrix (and greater again in a nitrogen matrix) than in the gas phase.
