P. Uneputty et al., THE EFFECTIVENESS OF A COMMUNITY EDUCATION-PROGRAM IN REDUCING LITTERPOLLUTION ON SHORES OF AMBON BAY (EASTERN INDONESIA), Journal of Biological Education, 32(2), 1998, pp. 143-147
A beach clean-up event, which was based on four coastal villages in Am
bon Bay (eastern Indonesia), was effective in removing liner from shor
es. The event was also successful in changing the behaviour of village
rs because they continued to keep shores clean for a period of at leas
t six months afterwards. However, long-term success is unlikely becaus
e shores become polluted with litter from distant sources, particularl
y the city of Ambon. The solution will probably require: (i) a concert
ed education campaign involving all coastal villages and Ambon city; a
nd (ii) effective garbage disposal systems.
