Multilayered coatings have been produced by a number of techniques of
which electrodeposition has been associated with the concept of compos
ition modulation when applied to alloys (CMA). The interest centres ar
ound enhanced properties in the coatings. This paper reviews the evide
nce for enhanced properties and indications of their origins. A phenom
enological model for the one-dimensional elastic response of the coati
ngs is described and it is shown that this model has the capability of
reproducing the elastic anomalies that are observed experimentally. T
he extension of the phenomenological model to consider three-dimension
al elastic response and to examine one-dimensional plastic behaviour i
s discussed. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.
