Abstract
Properties are stated of the statistical distribution of the backgroun d in a setup intended for measurements of small quantities of radioact ive materials. The concepts ''detection limit'' and ''measuring limit' ' and their statistical meaning are discussed using methods of the pro bability theory and mathematical statistics. The necessity is shown of using these concepts in estimating the sensitivity of radiometric equ ipment and of the determination method as a whole.
