Abstract
The nuclear small-subunit ribosomal DNA sequence from the freshwater r ed alga Boldia erythrosiphon Herndon emend Howard et Parker was determ ined. Phylogenetic analysis confirms the positioning of this species w ithin the bangiophycidean order of the Compsopogonales. The results st rongly suggest that occupation of freshwater habitats by marine red al gae has happened at least twice during red algal evolution.
