Abstract
Lateral instability in reaction-diffusion fronts of the chlorite oxida tion of tetrathionate is studied experimentally in three dimensions. A simple two-variable model based on the empirical rate law of the reac tion is utilized to reproduce the experimental observations. The onset of instability does not change by extending the system from two to th ree dimensions; the natural wavelength associated with the cellular st ructure, however, slightly decreases.
