Nonlinear dissipative processes are of central interest in quantum opt
ics. The solution of those problems, however, causes serious mathemati
cal problems, and linearization is the most frequently used approximat
ion. On the basis of the model of dispersive optical bistability, we i
nvestigate the validity of linearization by comparing those results wi
th the numerical solution of the nonlinear dynamics. At points of inst
ability, where the non-classical behaviour is most prominent, lineariz
ation fails by underestimating the quantum fluctuations.
