In Medecine et Maladies Infectieuses (1997; 27 : 740-1), P. Dellamonic
a commented on the data issued by the regional pneumococcal observator
ies. He considered the methodology inadequate because the population a
nd infection were not specified. He went on to state that the conclusi
ons based on this data could not be generally applied. The coordinator
s of the regional pneumococcal observatories replied to this criticism
by recalling both their mission and methods. Their conclusions were b
ased on the work done in each region. In 1995, the pattern of pneumoco
ccal resistance studied in 7 regions (6,000 isolates) was very similar
from one region to the next.
