Abstract
This article explores the risk factors for the development of diarrhea . Preventive strategies include education and chemoprophylaxis with bi smuth subsalicylate-containing compounds or antimicrobial agents. Trea tment options include attapulgite, bismuth subsalicylate-containing co mpounds, loperamide, antimicrobial agents, and the combination of lope ramide and an antimicrobial agent. New strategies include nonabsorbed antimicrobial agents and a calmodulin inhibitor. Vaccines against ente rotoxigenic Escherichia coli and Shigella are being evaluated.
