Abstract
The temperature and electromagnetic effects on erbium-doped fiber (EDF ) amplifier (EDFA) systems are investigated. First, the temperature se nsitivity at the connection of single-mode fiber and erbium-doped fibe r in an EDFA system pumped at 980 nm amounts to -0.023 dB degrees C-1 (or -7.2 mV degrees C-1) in the temperature range of 25 to 95 degrees C. This can be accounted for by the temperature-induced coupling loss and the gain characteristics of the EDFA. Second, the effect of electr ic and magnetic fields on the EDF of the EDFA system are shown. The el ectromagnetic interference effect on the photodiode and its light powe r and wavelength dependences are also discussed. (C) 1998 Society of P hoto-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.
