The dissolution of leucite (KAlSi2O8) and the precipitation of sanidin
e (NaxK1-xAlSi3O8; 0.1 < x < 0.3), occurring during isothermal heat tr
eatments of a dental porcelain for porcelain-fused-to-metal restoratio
ns, was studied. The identification of phases was performed by X-ray d
iffraction, optical and scanning electron microscopy. An isothermal ti
me-temperature-transformation (TTT) diagram, from 800 to 1000-degrees-
C, and for periods up to 1440 min, is proposed. No metastable cubic le
ucite was retained by air-quenching in any sample. No increase of leuc
ite volume fraction was observed.
