A method for creating an extended planar spiral from a segment of a gi
ven planar spiral is described. Spirals that satisfy certain condition
s are used here so that the following important result holds. The main
result of this paper is that there is a unique segment of the given s
piral or unique extended spiral that matches very general given G(1) H
ermite data. The slight restriction on the G(1) Hermite data is that i
t can be represented as a triangle and the unit tangent vector turns t
hrough an angle of less than pi. This paper shows how to find a G(1) H
ermite interpolating curve where the segments joining each pair of int
erpolation points are spirals. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
