Ha. Abdelaal, ON A METHOD TO DEDUCE FRICTION-INDUCED TEMPERATURES FROM THERMAL STRAIN-MEASUREMENTS IN THE DRY SLIDING OF METALLIC PAIRS, International communications in heat and mass transfer, 25(5), 1998, pp. 609-618
This paper proposes a procedure to utilize thermal strains as a thermo
metric mean to recover the temperature distribution in tribe-specimens
. The procedure is demonstrated in relation to strain data obtained by
the analysis of the so-called ''Double Exposure Speckle Grams''. Tota
l strain components, are resolved into: elastic, plastic, and thermal.
These in turn are used to construct a system of difference equations,
the solution of which, yields a complete characterization of the stra
in fields. Thermal strains are subsequently fed in a look-up table con
taining the coefficient of thermal expansion for the test material at
different temperatures to yield the temperature distribution. The resu
lts are validated by comparison to an analytical model and, relevant e
xperimental data. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.
