Abstract
A direct relation was found for the surface energy of four different b acteria as measured by the contact angle of a 0.1 m NaCl solution appl ied to a bacterial layer and the contact angle of the colony of the ba cterium. It is suggested that the contact angle of a colony to the aga r can be used as a simple and direct measurement of the hydrophobicity of bacteria.
