A training programme for educational supervisors for medical doctors i
n specialist training was introduced in Norway in October 1986. By Mar
ch 1997 approximately 550 senior consultants from major Norwegian hosp
itals had participated in the programme. The programme has been contin
uously evaluated by a questionnaire returned by participants at the cl
osing session of each course. The effects of the training programme on
educational supervision in specialist training has been evaluated in
two postal survey studies. The results show that the training programm
e has helped the consultants to become better supervisors and motivate
d them to supervise trainees. The programme has stimulated the consult
ants to improve the structure of the teaching programmes in the hospit
al ward.
