The possibility of generating the observed baryon asymmetry of the uni
verse in an SO(10) gauge model with spontaneous symmetry breaking patt
ern SO(10) (M-X) under right arrow SU(4)(PS) x SU(2)(L) x SU(2)(R) (M-
R) under right arrow SU(3)c x SU(2)(L) x U(1)(Y) (M-Z) under right arr
ow SU(3)(c) U(1)(Q) is studied. We find it possible to generate a Delt
a B = B-n(-n)(B) over bar/s similar to 10(-11), converting the leptoni
c number produced at the B - L breaking scale via the B + L violating
processes mediated by sphalerons at the electroweak scale. The resulti
ng picture is tested against the limit coming from experimental data:
proton lifetime and neutrino oscillations.
