This study evaluates the European Quit and Win contest 1994 in Finland
, Russia and Spain/Catalonia. The numbers of participants were 5,879 i
n Finland (0.6% of smokers), 28,361 in Russia (0.1%) and 1,752 in Spai
n/Catalonia (0.1%). A one year follow-up survey was conducted, with re
sponse rates 67% in Finland (n=1,419), 38% in Russia (n=339) and 42% i
n Spain/Catalonia (n=353). Two outcome estimates were used: the propor
tion of abstainers among the respondents and the among the sample rega
rding all non-respondents as relapsed. For the first estimate, the abs
tinence rates were 23.0% in Finland, 32.1% in Russia and 34.5% in Spai
n/Catalonia (p<0.001). For the latter estimate, the corresponding figu
res were 15.4, 12.1 and 14.5% (p=0.057). The results suggest that this
cessation method obtains satisfying abstinence results in different c
ountries.
