Abstract
The general pharmacological properties of TJ-9 extract were investigat ed in various experimental animals. TJ-9 extract at 0.3, 1.0 and 3.0 g /kg showed no effect on spontaneous locomotor activity hexobarbital-in duced sleeping time, electroshock-, strychnine-, and pentylenetetrazol -induced convulsions, frequency of acetic acid-induced writhing, body temperature, and skeletal muscle coordination in mice. In anesthetized dogs, TJ-9 extract at 0.3, 1.0 and 3.0 g/kg, had no effect on the fre quency of respiration, blood pressure, heart rate, and EGG. TJ-9 extra ct at 10(-4), 10(-5) and 10(-6) g/ml also had no effect on acetylcholi ne or barium chloride-induced contraction of guinea pig ileum. TJ-9 ex tract at 10(-4) g/ml, however, increased histamine-induced contraction s, and spontaneous motility of the guinea pig ileum. TJ-9 extract at 0 .3, 1.0 and 3.0 g/kg had no effect on blood coagulation and platelet a ggregation in rats. TJ-9 extract at the lowest dose of 0.3 g/kg inhibi ted the gastric juice secretion, gastric pH, and gastric acid output, and at 1.0 g/kg inhibited the gastric acidity and bile secretion in ra ts. TJ-9 extract at 0.3, 1.0, and 3.0 g/kg, however, had no effect on the intestinal transport of charcoal meal in rats. TJ-9 extract at 3.0 g/kg produced a decrease of urine volume, but never decreased the uri ne electrolytes, Na+, K+, and Cl concentration. These results suggest that TJ-9 extract exerts anti-ulcer properties by inhibiting the gastr ic secretion and gastric acid output, but it showed no notable pharmac ological effects on the central nervous system, autonomic nervous syst em or smooth muscle function, respiratory and cardiovascular system, a nd blood coagulation and fibrinolysis function.
