Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) Syndrome is a disorder of cardiac conducti
on which may cause recurrent atrial and ventricular rhythm disturbance
s, and even sudden death. The diagnosis of this condition or, more fre
quently the associated electrocardiographic (ECC) abnormality, in a pr
ofessional aircrew member has, until recently, been cause for disquali
fication of that individual from flying status. The recent use of elec
trophysiological studies (EPS) in patients with WPW, and the use of ra
diofrequency ablation (RFA) to the accessory pathway(s), offers aircre
w a safe and effective treatment for their condition.
