The influence of recent temperature changes on plankton biogeography a
nd vertical distribution are compared with temperature variations and
biogeographical distributions in the geological past. The combination
of food supply and temperature is determinant for vertical and horizon
tal distribution patterns. From studies of paleo-biogeography we have
predicted patterns of changes that might take place as a result of pos
sible future climate change. Special attention has been given to likel
y changes in the Vertical distribution of deep-sea animals.
