Abstract
The He I and He II photoelectron spectra of 2(3H)-furanone and 5-methy l-2(3H)-furanone have been recorded. They show a third band not report ed earlier. The first three bands in the spectrum of 2(3H)-furanone at 9.76, 10.65 and 12.83 eV are assigned to ionizations from the pi(C=C- O-), n(O(C=O)), and.pi(-O-C=O)* orbitals, respectively. Correlation w ith orbitals in ethene and acetic acid reveals significant pi-conjugat ion in the furanones. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserv ed.
