Abstract
ArF laser-induced liquid-phase photolysis of benzene and hexafluoroben zene afford similar products which are polyaromatic hydrocarbons or fl uorocarbons with the preponderance of biphenyl or decafluorobiphenyl, graphite, and polymeric H-containing or F-containing carbon. The remar kable feature is that the graphite formation occurs at ambient tempera ture of the irradiated liquids; photolytic graphitization modes must t herefore be different from those occurring in thermally-induced graphi tization at temperatures above 2500 degrees C.
