Abstract
Although there is substantial evidence that a high percentage of juven ile delinquents suffer from treatable forms of psychopathology, which could be amenable to appropriate intervention, only a small minority o f child psychiatrists is involved in their diagnosis and treatment. Th is article offers a comprehensive review of relevant psychiatric resea rch regarding juvenile delinquents, and identifies areas in which the research findings can be applied in the service of more effective work with this population. in addition, the authors provide a useful guide to the settings that constitute the juvenile justice system. Early in tervention, a range of available treatment options, the use of realist ic settings, and commitment to long-term service provision are promine nt among the recommendations.
