Abstract
A semi-empirical Anderson-Newns-Grimley model is applied to consider t he decreasing of the binding energy per atom in one-dimensional metal clusters on metal supports as a result of the adatom-substrate bond. D imer, linear trimer and infinite chain are studied. The competition be tween the adatom-adatom and the adatom-substrate ineraction is reveale d. A comparison with experimental measurements and other theoretical c alculations is made.
