Otitis media is recognized as one of the most common diseases of child
hood. Insertion of tympanostomy tubes for the treatment of otitis medi
a is the most frequently performed otologic operation, and postoperati
ve otorrhea is its most common complication. Many authors have suggest
ed various reasons for posttympanostomy otorrhea, and many different p
rophylactic treatments were proposed in recent years to prevent this b
othersome and frustrating complication. This retrospective study was d
esigned to investigate and compare the efficacy of various prophylacti
c treatments and to define the most effective method of reducing the r
ate of postoperative otorrhea.
