d5-Methyl-2-phenyl-2-hexenal, a distinctly smelling compound, was iden
tified as a constituent of the male scent gland secretion of two speci
es of cave crickets, Troglophilus cavicola and T. neglectus. It is the
first proof of a male specific exocrine compound in grasshoppers. A p
heromonal function of the component could not be established; its poss
ible biological role is discussed. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All
