Abstract
A newly developed CoNiFe film is investigated from the viewpoint of it s application to MR write heads. Film composition is Co65Ni12Fe23, pre pared by electroplating to obtain a b.c.c. plus f.c.c. mixed phase at that composition. Films with mixed phases improve soft magnetic proper ties (B-s is 2.0-2.1 T and the magnetostriction coefficient is +1.8x10 (-6) to +7.4x10(-6)) and also show improved corrosion resistance. Perf ormance of a head with a double layer structure of a 0.3 mu m CoNiFe f ilm and a 4.1 mu m NiFe film is investigated, and a short throat heigh t is found to give better overwrite performance.
