Abstract
This paper presents a new framework towards control of cross-direction al profiles in sheet-forming processes. The proposed method uses adapt ive principal component analysis to identify the significant disturban ce modes from on-line data. To resolve the potential problems associat ed with large dimensional and ill-conditioned systems a low order subs pace is constructed for controller design purposes. Certain projection and reduction techniques are given to systematically arrive at this d esign subspace. Simulations illustrate that the resulting controller i s easy to design and able to isolate and reject the significant distur bance modes. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
