Abstract
This paper addresses the problem of calculating the radial force in tu rning, when the feed force is known. The empirical equations presented are used to predict the chip flow direction for tools with a nose rad ius that may also have a cutting edge inclined to the direction of pri mary motion. The predicted chip flow direction, measured feed force, k nown tool geometry and cutting conditions are then used to predict the radial force component. A comparison between the predicted and experi mentally measured forces, for tools with a range of chipbreaker geomet ries, shows good agreement.
