R. Jertz et al., DIRECT DETERMINATION OF THE MASS OF SI-28 AS A CONTRIBUTION TO A NEW DEFINITION OF THE KILOGRAM, Physica scripta. T, 48(4), 1993, pp. 399-404
The mass of Si-28 has been determined to be m(Si-28) = 27.976 926 57(3
0)u by comparing the cyclotron frequencies of the singly charged ions
C-12+, C-12(3)+ and Si-28+ in a Penning trap mass spectrometer. The ex
perimental technique and the setup are described. The obtained accurac
y as well as possible improvements are discussed. Our measurements are
related to current efforts to base the kilogram on atomic properties
by using an almost perfect single crystal of silicon.
