Abstract
The mass of Si-28 has been determined to be m(Si-28) = 27.976 926 57(3 0)u by comparing the cyclotron frequencies of the singly charged ions C-12+, C-12(3)+ and Si-28+ in a Penning trap mass spectrometer. The ex perimental technique and the setup are described. The obtained accurac y as well as possible improvements are discussed. Our measurements are related to current efforts to base the kilogram on atomic properties by using an almost perfect single crystal of silicon.
