State selective total and differential cross sections for charge excha
nge collisions between N3+ ions and atomic H have been calculated for
incident ion energies ranging from 10 to 1000 eV/amu. Over the whole e
nergy range capture to the 3s level of N2+ dominates. The influence of
translation effects on both the total and differential cross sections
is analysed in detail. Only when translation effects are accounted fo
r, is it possible to reproduce the experimental total cross sections f
or energies above 100 eV/amu. On the other hand, the position of the m
axima and minima in the differential cross sections depend only weakly
on translation effects.
